The Color Red

As a child, I loved to watch my mother get dressed up.  I particularly enjoyed the ceremonious way she prepared for cocktail parties with my dad.  She always would lay her garments on the bed and the accessory possibilities beside the dresses.  Of course she had a wardrobe of elegant evening shoes to go with each outfit.  Then, she would begin the selection task and ask my sister and me to give our approvals.  Dressing for the event would go smoothly with the last addition being her ruby red lipstick that she would meticulously blot on with a tissue.  Picture perfect was Cinderella as she went to the ball.

Days later when mom was not around I would go into her closet and do my own dress rehearsal.  I was about twelve when I began practicing, dressing like mom.  I followed her routine but I would have to stuff additional clothing in her dresses so they wouldn’t fall down.  I was especially fond of her dangling earrings and would always choose the largest ones I could find.  Like mom,the finishing touch was her ruby red lipstick that no matter how hard I tried I could not get straight on my lips.  I only wish I had pictures of my attempts to be mom!  To this day I am very fond of red lipstick and where this love came from.

What are your thoughts and or memories about the color red?

Project 3 – And the Children Marched

October 19, 2013

WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT HOME FOR THIS PROJECT.  IT WILL BE A GIFT!   IF YOU HAVE ANY POSSIBILITIES FOR US,  PLEASE PROVIDE THE INFORMATION TO OUR EMAIL ADDRESS FOR CONSIDERATION.

And the Children Marched is a project dedicated to the 1963 children’s march in Birmingham, Alabama.  The project consist of a 12’ mural and a video interviewing Reverend C.T. Vivian, of the Southern Christian Leadership Council , one of the organizers of this famous march and an executive assistance to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This is a multi-media project involving other artist and artisans.

There were many generous contributors to this wonderful project and the objective is to find a final home for the mural and the video.

We are working through some of the technical challenges with the video but should be in a position by fall of 2012 to begin the search for an adoption.  Our vision is to gift the project to a museum or like entity. We will keep you informed and by all means let us know if you have an institution you would like to recommend.

For additional information on this project please go to the multi-media Projects tab on this website.

I am actually going to start looking for a gallery to show my body of work.  I have been playing catch up but it’s time to see who will be presenting my work.  Will keep you posted!

At the same time I started writing the poetry that ultimately became the Life Iz Colorful book; I was painting works of art that mirrored some of the words in the poems.  I hope to have 50-60 original works for a gallery show in fall 2013.  Some of these pieces will not be in the book.

I will keep you posted on my progress.  This has been a major undertaking.

Great book launches for Kickstarter.  I think I was so excited about the launches that I fell from a ladder and injured my arm and hand which set back the books timeline.  However, I am back on track and Life iz Colorful will definitely be available online by the end of 2013.

Will keep you posted!

The book Life Iz Colorful is a visual recording of moments and lessons learned in life, expressed through art and poetry.  The manuscript is approximately 160 pages filled with colorful images from original works of art and reflective poetry.  You can expect to read poetry that expresses many emotions and experiences that human beings share—love, joy, anger, betrayal, confusion, choices, craziness, emptiness, self-discovery, freedom, and more.

This book project has been  approved with  Kickstarter, an international platform to help creative people raise money for creative  projects.  Our target date for the Life Iz Colorful Book fund raising campaign with Kickstarter is March 1, 2013.  We have created some great gifts as exchanges for those who pledge funds to this project.  Please refer to the Kickstarter Gift Exchange Tab to see some of the gifts.

We are on target with a  March 1, 2013 launch.  Follow our progress on this blog or Facebook under Barbara Kendall Reed or Life Iz Colorful Fan Page!
